This year, the MassHire YouthWorks Summer internship program was a success. A 6-week program providing approximately 275 local youth career exploration and workforce development opportunities. Participants ranged from age 14 to 25 years old. This year participants entered internships where they gained first-hand experience in team collaboration, leadership development, working with the public and a working knowledge of different career paths they may be interested in pursuing.

In many cases top performing youth build relationships with our worksites hosts and are offered a job through the school year.

Much of the program’s success is attributed to our wonderful partners that were willing to host our Youth participant employees. These local businesses and organizations willingly stepped forward to serve as mentors who coached our interns on how to gain success in their specific industry, provided basic work skills development training and further guided our young population in conducting industry specific tasks. The program offered our young aspiring professionals first hand exposure to different careers they may be interested in pursuing. An invaluable advantage for a young person when crafting their professional self.

New Bedford Boys & Girls Club:

“We have 10 excellent MassHire Summer employees working at the Boys and Girls Club. Eight of these employees serve as Counselors. They are instrumental in interacting with the children, playing games with them, supervising the children while playing indoors and outdoors, eating lunch and playing on the computer. Also, these counselors are vital in monitoring the children on field trips like the recent trip to the Museum of Science. In addition, two other MassHire YouthWorks participants serve as maintenance workers and perform custodial duties and play an important role in helping maintain and keeping the building and grounds clean.”

Jasmine Costa, from Winslow School. Jasmine works at the Winslow School as a maintenance worker. Ian, her supervisor, cannot stop raving about how helpful and reliable Jasmine has been. Many times Ian has said he wouldn’t have been able to get the school ready for this upcoming year without her. Jasmine’s confidence in who she is and what she is capable of has also grown, as Ian has pointed out.

The MassHire Summer Youthworks internship program is a wonderful opportunity for youth in the community to learn essential work development skills, gain entry level employment experience and explore various career paths. Participating businesses, community organizations and partnering agencies enjoy connecting with our future workforce and additional paid seasonal help, while building long-standing friendships with our communities’ young population.

We are truly thankful to our community partners that hosted our youth participants this summer. This year’s program success is a direct result of the high-quality support and guidance that our partners provided to our summer workers.

Master Lee’s Taekwondo, would like to highlight Tajahn Henry. Taijahn works at Master Lee’s Taekwondo, which also serves as a daycare in the morning and afternoons. Taijahn is an impressive young man that will make an instant impression on you as soon as you meet him. He stood out in our live signals session and continues to stand out every day at Master Lee’s where he works as a daycare provider. Taijahn’s supervisor Master Kwan could not believe how fast Taijahn fit in and was able to contribute immediately. Taijahn has commented to Master Kwan at how cool this daycare was because it incorporates the culture, values, and discipline of Taekwondo into its daycare operation.
