This summer, MassHire Greater New Bedford Workforce Board’s Summer YouthWorks initiative successfully recruited youths and worksites for our state-funded program, providing over 280 young people with the opportunity to gain valuable part-time work experience for six weeks. Throughout this process, our team engaged in meaningful conversations with youth and young adults ages 14 to 25 about their career interests and the types of workplaces where they felt they could thrive.
One of those youths was Jonathan Bartolomey, a student at New Bedford High School. Jonathan shared his career goal of one day working in the hospitality industry, with a strong interest in gaining experience in hotels and food service. His enthusiasm and clear career interests led him to a wonderful placement at Sorbae Frozen Treats, a local business owned by Monica Ferracioli.
During his time at Sorbae, Jonathan learned the ins and outs of making gourmet popsicles, gained hands-on experience in a kitchen environment, practiced food safety, and most importantly, developed strong customer service skills. His positive attitude and excitement for hospitality and food service quickly impressed both our staff and Monica, who was thrilled to have him as part of her team.
This partnership not only supported Monica in running her business but also provided Jonathan with the chance to thrive in a workplace that didn’t feel like “just a job.”
Jonathan started way before MassHire; he was named president of the Key Club and received an award during his time in the Hospitality and Tourism Class and Career Exploration at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. Recently, he had accepted a scholarship to the school and will be pursuing his dream in the field.
