As the summer sun finally arrives and brings its welcome
warmth to our region, it serves as a wonderful reminder of the energy,
resilience, and vibrancy that define our community. While the season often
invites a naturally slower pace, the vital work of connecting people with
meaningful employment remains as active and essential as ever.
Summer is a critical window of opportunity for both local
job seekers looking to build a better future and employers seeking the talent
necessary to thrive. Our commitment to driving economic growth and getting
people back to work doesn’t take a vacation. Every placement, every training
opportunity, and every workforce connection we forge during these months helps
build a stronger, more sustainable local economy.
If you, a family member, or anyone you know is currently in
need of employment services, career training, or recruitment support, please
reach out to our organization. We are here to help guide you toward the right
opportunities and provide the resources necessary to succeed.

I am incredibly proud of our dedicated team and the
collaborative network of partners who work tirelessly to keep our momentum
strong. Together, we are ensuring that as the temperatures rise, so do the
opportunities for our workforce.

From a Chance Meeting to a Career Path: A MassHire
Journey
|
|
Michael Santos, Executive Director/CEO & Nicholas Fonseca, Youth Case Manager
|
|
What started as a chance encounter quickly turned into a
defining opportunity.
As he prepared to enter his senior year at Bridgewater State
University, Nicholas Fonseca was looking for meaningful, hands-on experience to shape his
future career. That opportunity began unexpectedly with a conversation at a
local restaurant.
|
|
|
|
After meeting MassHire Greater New Bedford Workforce Board
Executive Director/CEO, Michael Santos, the two quickly discovered a shared
connection as fellow Bridgewater State University graduates. As they spoke
about goals and career aspirations, Michael shared his passion for workforce
development and the impact MassHire has in the community.
“His passion for his work was evident, and it was clear he
wanted to help me succeed,” Nick recalled. “After coming in for a visit and
meeting the team, I learned about all the services MassHire offers the public.
I realized there was a real opportunity not only to grow personally but also to
make a meaningful impact in my local community.”

Nick joined MassHire Greater New Bedford Workforce Board as
an intern and quickly immersed himself in the organization, gaining experience
across marketing, grants, youth services, and workforce development
initiatives.
One of the biggest surprises was seeing how many moving
parts work together behind the scenes to help individuals find employment and
advance their careers.
“It was mind-blowing to see all the different parts that go
into what we do here,” Nick said. “Nobody’s job is more important than another
person’s. Everyone’s individual contribution works toward our shared goal of
expanding employment opportunities and helping people build better lives.”
The experience also supported Nick’s professional growth.
Coming from primarily informal work environments, learning to navigate a
professional setting became one of the most valuable parts of his internship.
“Being involved in marketing, the grant commission, youth
team, and more has given me the confidence to take on new challenges, even
outside my comfort zone.”
Among his proudest accomplishments was helping organize the
Youth Expo, which brought together more than 25 local businesses and 150 young
people from area schools.
“It was super rewarding to see the team’s efforts come to
fruition,” he said. “Youth were able to make valuable connections with local
businesses and public figures, working toward our goal of equal opportunity in
our communities.”
Nick also credits the MassHire team for creating a
supportive environment from day one.

How It All Started: Mike's Perspective
Our journey began quite unexpectedly at a local restaurant.
I had the pleasure of being seated in Nick’s section on three different
occasions, and each time I was struck by his professionalism and energy. We
eventually got to talking and discovered a great connection. He was attending
Bridgewater State University, the very same school I graduated from!
As we discussed his studies, his interests, and his outlook
on the future, I knew right then that his passion and demeanor were exactly
what we needed. On that third visit, I couldn’t let the opportunity pass by—I
offered him the chance to join us as an intern, promising a hands-on experience
that would touch every corner of our organization. He came in for a tour the
following week, met the team, and officially accepted the role!
Since then, Nick has been a powerhouse. To ensure he became
a truly well-rounded professional in the workforce system, he has immersed
himself in:
- Our
Youth Programs
- The
Grant Commission
- Social
Media Strategy
- Fiscal
Operations
He has grown tremendously in such a short amount of time, and the timing
couldn't be more perfect. Nick graduated in May! We could not be any happier or
prouder of his hard work.
We are beyond excited about welcoming Nick as a full-time employee. I know
he is going to do amazing things assisting young people in finding their paths
and providing the vital mentoring that makes such a difference in a person's
life. -- Michael Santos, Executive Director/CEO, MH GNB WB
|
|
|
|
“I felt set up for success and supported by a team that
believed in me. I was given responsibilities right away and never hesitated to
ask for help.”
One tradition that stood out was the bell-ringing
celebration whenever a customer secures full-time employment.
“It’s a reminder that we are truly making a difference in
someone’s life.”
Now graduating from Bridgewater State University with a
degree in Public Relations and minors in Politics, Economics, Philosophy, and
Marketing and Management, Nick is stepping into a full-time role with MassHire
GNB Workforce Board’s Youth Team.
“Being offered a full-time position was incredibly
rewarding,” he said. “It reaffirmed that my hard work was recognized, and I
couldn’t be more excited to begin my professional journey with MassHire GNB.”
Looking ahead, Nick is focused on helping young people
navigate the same uncertainty he once faced.
“It is more challenging than ever to decide on a career, so
it’s fulfilling to help ease that pressure,” he said. “I want to create
meaningful experiences and pathways for the youth in our community.”
Outside of work, Nick is pursuing a goal of visiting 20
countries. He has visited four so far and has an upcoming trip to Japan.
The future is bright for Nick, and so is the impact he is
set to make in the community.

A Pathway to Success in Ocean Technology
|
|
Mark Parsons, Founder/ CEO of New Bedford Research & Robotics, Callum Melrose, ROV training participant, and Rodney Solomon, MH GNB Career Center Director
|
|
My name is Callum Melrose, and I participated in both the
Industrial Robotics training and the Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle
training program. I come from a mechanical engineering background and was
focused on building a career in the marine technology industry.
I discovered the training programs via the Ocean Tech Center
in Rhode Island. I was looking to expand my skillset and saw this as a strong
opportunity to add practical, industry-relevant experience.
|
|
|
|
My experience working with the Career Center team was
straightforward and positive. I was able to easily connect with the right
staff, and I appreciated the flexibility of being able to meet both in person
and over the phone as needed.
The training helped me launch my current career path. I am
now self-employed with NorthEast Ocean Systems, where I focus on ROV sales,
training, and custom integrations. I also work in partnership with Blue
Robotics and an underwater camera company, DWE.
