Offshore Wind 101: New Bedford High School Students Offered Learning Opportunity in Emerging IndustryOn Tuesday, July 20, 2021, students at NBHS participated in a presentation about an opportunity to take a unique, college-level, dual-enrollment course in the emerging field of offshore wind.

Chris Powicki, Adjunct Professor at Cape Cod Community College presentation, focused on the industry’s relevance to the community and available career opportunities including internships. James Oliveira, Executive Director at MassHire GNB Workforce Board, upped the ante stating that students who enroll and successfully complete the course will receive $100 from the Workforce Board.

This free, virtual “Offshore Wind 101” course commences September 7 and runs through December 13, 2021. Students will learn the principles of renewable energy from a global perspective and basic energy/electricity concepts in relation to technology, policies, markets, and effects on the earth’s climate, as well as career pathways in the sustainable energy arena. Case studies and experiments will reinforce basic concepts, develop analytical skills, and provide system-level understanding.

NBHS juniors and seniors interested in participating should talk with their guidance counselor for enrollment information. Enrollment deadline is August 1st.
